In Memoriam

Samuel Benjamin Hanser, a"h

On the 29th of Tevet, we commemorated the 3rd yartzeit of Sam's passing.

We would like to clear up lingering questions surrounding Sam's early death.

Our son did not die from "surgery complications". Sam's tragic and early death, two weeks shy of his 28th birthday, was sadly due to his excessive ingestion of two prescription painkillers, as well as a prescription sleep aid, in the immediate afternoon and evening hours following routine and successful dental surgery to remove his impacted wisdom teeth.

Prescription drugs cause most of the more than 26,000 fatal overdoses each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Drug overdose deaths were second only to motor vehicle crash deaths among leading causes of unintentional injury death in 2007 in the United States. The CDC warns against the nonmedical use of legal drugs, which includes taking more than the prescribed amount, taking drugs prescribed for someone else, or substance abuse.

The CDControl also recommends that health care providers prescribe opioid pain relievers with extreme care.

It is our responsibility as parents to protect our beloved children. We want all parents to not suffer the pain we experienced in losing our beloved son Sam, so please raise your awareness of Unintentional Drug Overdosing in the United States by visiting the CDC website.
